ALLEY OOP first appeared in the comic strips of Bonnet-Brown on December 5, 1932. When that
company closed its doors four month later, the strip migrated over to Newspaper Enterprise
Association. The strip was created by V.T. Hamlin, who both drew and wrote the series for nearly forty
years.
Since Alley Oop was a caveman, his adventures, at first, were confined to the Bone Age in the Kingdom
of Moo. He was joined in his exploits with his pet dinosaur Dinny and his girlfriend Ooola. In 1939
Hamlin introduced Dr. Elbert Wonmug and his time machine to the strip. This opened up a whole new
direction for the comic as Alley Oop traveled to Camelot, Ancient Egypt, Sherwood Forest and even the
old west of America. Alley Oop was full of laughs, action, adventure and even science fiction. The strip
has stood the test of time and continues to be excellent reading fare today.
The Alley Oop series is primarily known for its history in comic strips, but there were some comic books
based on the characters as well. Unfortunately not a lot of them are in the public domain and locating
decent scans of the ones that are is a challenge. This book collects the three issues published by Argo
Publications and two of the issues published by Standard Comics.
