Whatever Happened to the Ice Ages?

We are told that around 12,000 years ago much of Europe and North America were covered by great ice sheets. Such information is taught in schools and textbooks as a scientific fact. But did it really happen? What does science itself have to say? Are all the geographic features presented as evidence of advancing ice sheets really evidence of a great ice age, or could something else be responsible?
