The year was 1845 and a young America, not quite seventy years old, yearned to begin the process of expanding to the West. Will McGuniess is one of the first West Point graduates, a result of America's grudging efforts at providing trained military personnel for the country. His staunch abolitionist father has burdened him with the middle name of Napoleon, much to the amusement of Will's peers. Will is assigned to General Zachary Taylor's army sent to defend Texas from the threat of attack from Mexico. We follow Will as he participates in the early campaigns in Northern Mexico. Will grows from a idealistic young officer to one who has overcome the burden of the battle as well as struggles with his Irish heritage, his deep antislavery feelings and the duplicity of enemy.
