Down the Steps into Africa is an account of a young volunteer who undergoes a life changing experience during 1962/63 in a rural part of Tanganyika. Sent by Voluntary Service Overseas, he finds himself in a nation on the verge of independence, with the new landscapes, cultures, and challenges swiftly relegating the comforts of home.
The story, based on dramatic experiences, such as the long, uncomfortable journey to the mission station, and cultural confusion with new people, as well as the difficult but rewarding teaching experiences in a remote hillside school, reflects not only the challenges, but also the silent joys of service. The story represents a wider historical shift, in which colonial administrations are replaced with new ones, along with some personal experiences. It is an insightful story of perseverance, exploration, and the long term effect of leaving the comfort zone.
The author went on to study dentistry at Guy’s Hospital in London before entering practice in Harley Street as well as working in Oral Surgery back at Guy’s Hospital. He has three adult children and lives with his wife, Susie, in Southwest London.
