The House on Franklin Street
Growing Up in Racine, Wisconsin, in the Early 1900s
Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
In the early 1900s, Helen Mangold grew up in a tall frame house on Franklin Street in Racine, Wisconsin. She was one of ten children, all born upstairs with the midwife, Mrs. Pahl, in attendance.
Papa ran a barber shop and boiled his own towels. Mae, who had come from a farm to help Mama, baked sixteen loaves of bread each week. On summer Sundays, the interurban carried the family out to Mama's people on County Line Road. In November, the boys flooded the swamp out back, hoping to have ice by Christmas. German was spoken at the supper table, English on the street, and someone was always practicing an instrument.
Drawn from family records and the history Helen wrote before she died, this illustrated book tells the story of one Racine family's daily life. At the end of each chapter, Rita Langner picks up the trail a hundred years later.
