Pornography. As many continue to celebrate the numerous liberations of a post-sexual revolution in an increasingly sexualized popular culture and others lament the so-called “pornographization” of said culture, it remains one of the most divisive issues of our time. Yet in pre-Republican Australia, there is anomaly – although pornography has been recognized as an issue of free speech in the USA, in Australia there currently exists no constitutional protection of said free speech and any government thus is effectively enabled to suppress whatever speech it likes, essentially for whatever reasons it sees fit. In Australia, this latest battle over acceptable discourse is concerned with religious vilification and the new anti-terror laws, there having already been books removed from library shelves due to their ideologically un-acceptable discursive content.
