The Newton We Knew

The Newton We Knew

Growing Up in Newton, Massachusetts

ByRoyce Hadlow

Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
Newton is still on the map. The thirteen villages are still there, and most of the streets still have the same names. Echo Bridge still crosses the Charles at Upper Falls, and the bathhouse still stands at Crystal Lake. The rest is not on any street. A hot loaf of Mazzola's bread on the way home from Mass. Jimmies, not sprinkles, at Brigham's. Two movies, a newsreel and a cartoon at the Paramount, dancing at the Totem Pole, the Cove frozen hard enough to skate, the bubblah at the playground in August, and a whole block of Newton Corner gone for the Turnpike. Thirty-five chapters about the Newton you grew up in: the places, the sounds and the small things nobody ever wrote down. The names are real and the streets are real. For anybody who grew up in Newton, or left it and never quite finished thinking about it.
