Adulthood Begins at 30*
When the rain fell, I was born into a world that had gone mad. I was christened in anticipation of a greater tomorrow that may bear fruit, someday, it was said. But my namers smeared my everyday with their generosity, reminding me how lucky I was to have a name. So I learned to measure every gift and ask the all-important question: what did I do to deserve this? Emphasis on DO. When I could not repay, I felt useless.
Then our nation's moral compass clasped hands with cruelty, and kidnapping became the new normal. Yet the ducks of Baba Balogun never turned into snakes, and the coins picked from the ground never became yams — some who found them bought goodies and shared them, even with the parents who warned them.
We called the strain on our parents' faces stress; it was veiled uncertainty.
I wrote this book because I have healed, and to give that girl like the one I was a fighting and winning chance. You are not your parents' mistake. You are not your past. Your future with God is all that counts.
Cheer up, there's hope!
