Agape Love, What It Really Means

The English language uses love with no much distinction. For example, you can say, “I love my dog”, “I love my wife”, “I love my car”, “I love my job”, “I love my brother”, “I love my friend”, “I love God” and so on, using the same word, “love”. In the Greek language however, there is distinction in all these loves because there are 5 different words chosen to express love. Agapē is the highest form of them. It is the only Love that leaves nothing out! It is the unconditional, never failing and never quitting sacrificial love of God. This love is shed abroad or poured into our heart or spirit at salvation by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). It is the Umpire Love. The Ultimate. Every other kind of love is incomplete without agapē; they’re imperfect without it. The New Testament has over 200 references to agapē love and this love is the theme of the first epistle of John. John by the Spirit gave us that great revelation of God’s nature, “God is love” (1John 4:8).
