Music: An Examination in Essay, Analysis, and Practice

This volume is in three parts: Book I is a scholarly essay seeking a definition of music and exploring some implications of that definition. Book II is a miniature research thesis, reporting original analytical research concerning five of Eric Whitacre's (b. 1970) choral works and illustrating the value of the definition proposed in Book I. Book III is an original song cycle for baritone and piano which illustrates the universal presence and reality of music and musical experience proposed in Book I and analytically illustrated in Book II.
