In this opening volume showcasing the retro and female-led fictions of Sandrine Bessancort, we are presented with three misadventures that begin in the Moscow of pre-revolutionary Russia and move to the London of Victorian England before concluding in the Paris of 19th Century France. We open with “The Servant Revisited”, as she describes the shame, humiliation, and erotic obsession that lies in wait for one jobless former golden-boy in a small provincial town on the outskirts of Moscow… Shame supplied by his employment with a young and now affluent widow from his even smaller former village. Ms Bessancort (writing as Sandrine D’Honfleur) follows up with “The Shaming of Purbeck”, her homage to the horror fiction of Victorian Britain and the tale of a young scientist who pays no heed to the warnings of his older colleagues and, instead, experiments with the eradication of evil through medicine… Only to create a demonic and sadistic female siren! Concluding this first volume is “Luella Miller Revisited”, as Ms Bessancort takes us back to the early years of the twentieth-century and a young and ambitious Baltimore journalist who is sent to the provinces by his editor in search of a story likely to satisfy the need for sensation craved by his newspaper's growing circulation… Only to uncover a tale of depraved female domination that will end his independent male life as he knows it. Sandrine Bessancort is the pen-name of a French-born and Honfleur based legal-professional with a passion for the re-imagining of antique tales with a female-led slant.
