James is a 19 year old slave, who works on a rich cotton plantation for a man named Joseph. When a very close person to James dies because of a whipping, he is done with slavery. James decides to escape, and find his freedom, but when a loved one dies along the way, he becomes doubtful if he’ll ever reach freedom. Along with the fact that slave-catchers are searching everywhere for him, and that he is already depressed, he doesn’t think he will ever reach freedom. Will James make it to the north? Or will he get caught and taken back to the plantation to be severely whipped or even killed? Read this exciting, yet emotional journey of a black slave trying to find his freedom.
