TOPICS IN GRAPH THEORY

1.1 INTRODUCTION Mathematics has existed for many centuries. In the ancient past, certain cultures developed their own Mathematics. In recent centuries, there has become only one International Mathematics. It has become more organized and has been divided into more clearly defined areas. Graph Theory is one of these mathematical areas. It is no coincidence that Graph Theory has been independently discovered many times, since it may quite properly be regarded as an area of Applied Mathematics. Graph Theory has come a long way since 1736 when Leonhard Euler (1707 – 1782) applied a graph theoretic argument to solve the Königsberg bridge problem.
