With the textural surface and atmospheric depth of the work, Starr works to invoke the sensuality of the emotion into an environment of the known and, perhaps, a bit of the unknown as well. The aesthetic and emotive qualities he depicts in his paintings, the atmosphere, if you will, relate to the familiarity of the unseen. The unknown places explored in the work become, in a sense, mindscapes that lack any discernible imagery but rather emphasize illusory qualities that merely reference the tangible. Starr’s use of light, depth and the intricate layers of space he portrays, ultimately, render his own inherent need and desire to embrace his artistry. The completed work reflects the tangible path of the artist’s process, his exploration, and his
objectified thought. Thus, the subject of Starr’s work may be found in the painterly process which serves as a vehicle for unfolding the path of his artistry and psyche.
