Tom Swift has some time off. In the past, he's started out unhappy—he loves to work—and ended with something silly or useful only to himself. This time looks to be no different until his best friend, Bud Barclay, challenges him to come up with and built something truly strange, but for a good reason. When the old Space Friends came back for a visit in book 30, Tom and his father ended up constructing a couple of weapons, even though they have abhorred weapons for years. Neither particularly deadly, but effective. Bud suggests Tom devise a practice weapon against a time when word gets out there is this place called Earth, sitting at the edge of the galaxy… Sticking with his determination to remain clear of destructive weaponry, Tom comes up with something he believes might be useful, and a bit of fun. Something he can use that will not harm anyone, yet leave no doubt who the winner might be. This is a mostly tongue-in-cheek tale about the time Tom created a potato cannon for use in outer space.
