Moses got the children of Israel to the promised land, but he didn't get to go in with them, because he disobeyed a direct commandment from God. He struck the rock instead of speaking to it. Joshua lead them in to the promised land and he did it the way God commanded him, which was with the edge of the sword. Nobody in the bible kicked more ass than Joshua. The story of Joshua makes the modern church-goer uncomfortable, because Joshua isn't warm, soft, and fluffy. When God says kill them all, he kills them all without exception, and all means all, even the women, children, and cattle. You will not get a warm and fuzzy feeling reading about Joshua. With that being said, there were still problems among the children of Israel with recognizing who their God really is. After Joshua, in the time of the Judges and later the kings, this same story of following the wrong god and the wrong religion repeats. As a matter of fact, this is the central repeating theme in the whole of the bible.
