When “Being” Feels Like Extra Work
You know that moment when you’re trying to live from your new identity, but you end up working harder than before - like you’ve traded one kind of doing for another? You sit there with good intentions, you remind yourself of your “shoulds,” and still your day runs you. By 2 p.m., you’re snapping at people, cutting corners, and thinking, “Why isn’t this sticking?”
That’s the obstacle: you’re treating being-mode like a separate task you have to remember to do. Identity doesn’t sink in when it’s only something you access during quiet moments. It sinks in when your choices - tiny, repeated ones - start to feel like the obvious way you’d respond. When the new identity only shows up as an effort, it stays fragile. And when it’s fragile, your brain reaches for the old default under stress.
Most people trip here because they’re using the wrong measurement. If you judge “being” by whether you feel inspired, you’ll be disappointed. Feelings fluctuate. But actions follow patterns. If you judge “being” by whether your day contains one or two identity-consistent choices, you’ll notice momentum - and you can build from there.
The fastest way to drain your motivation is to keep treating your life like a performance review. You show up, you work hard, you check the numbers, and you think, Okay… if this goes well, then I’m “worthy.” But the moment things get messy (and they always do), you start wondering whether you’re actually the kind of person who can do this. That “prove yourself” loop is exhausting because it asks you to earn your identity after the effort - like you’re waiting for permission.
Here’s the shift: let your identity lead your actions. Not in a fluffy, “manifest it” way. More like: you decide who you are first, then you choose behaviors that match that decision. When you do that, effort stops being a test and starts being a tool. You’re not trying to convince yourself you’re enough - you’re practicing being the person you already decided to become.
