Twelve Months at Hurricane Ridge - Olympic National Park's Crown Hurricane Ridge is a fearsome name, and a place that's known for its wildflowers. Hurricane Ridge hints at horrendous winds, yet can be calm enough that visitors are left to contemplate the Olympic Mountains in silence. Hurricane Ridge is a natural oddity, a slightly tilted meadow on a ridge amidst crags and canyons. As I've written and experienced in my other Twelve Month essays, visiting a place twelve months in a row is more like a committed relationship. It isn't a one-night-stand with pretty photos. It also is not a marriage. Twelve months is a middle ground, a way to get to know a place, and then, a way to get to know another place. Repeat.
