The Vitamin K Injection
What the Evidence Shows
Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
Every U.S. newborn is offered a shot in the leg in the first hour of life. Parents are rarely told the shot exists until the moment it is about to be given.
This book examines that shot. What it contains. What the manufacturer's own boxed warning says. What the studies that were done have found. What the studies that were never done would have needed to find. Where the practice came from — a 1961 recommendation, a 1985 shift to universal injection, a 1992 cancer signal that a rebuttal did not close — and how the framework locked in without the parent ever being consulted.
The book documents the three products currently in use in English-speaking countries: the U.S. Hospira formulation with its polyoxyethylated castor oil and benzyl alcohol preservative; the UK Konakion MM Paediatric with its glycocholic-acid mixed-micelle vehicle; and the Australian Konakion MM Paediatric with its lecithin base. It examines the depot injection's oil vehicle, the aluminum contamination the manufacturer discloses without context, the peanut allergy pathway the mainstream literature acknowledges but does not track, and the standing-order framework that bypasses individual consent. It documents the oral protocols in use in the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, and Denmark — none of which involve an intramuscular injection.
This is a reference for the parent facing a decision, the practitioner reviewing the evidence, and the reader who wants to understand a framework that has held since before their grandparents were born. What follows is what the evidence shows. What the reader does with it is between the reader and their own judgment.
