With one-way ship passage to Holland and $500 each, Meg, a college friend, and I began our backpacking trip around the world. In 1959 backpacking was not deemed an appropriate way for women to travel. Before reaching Japan 18 months later, we encountered obstacles from which we had to extricate ourselves. Among them, we ran out of money; were pursued by men late one night on a lonely road; and with the Cold War at its height, Meg collapsed in our Moscow hotel room.
