What happens when another person sees you—and the image begins to travel farther than you do?
In My Name Is Nobody — Recognition, Nobody stands beside a weathered WANTED poster carrying his own face. The image succeeds: he can be recognized. Yet the living person remains beside it, already more than the representation.
Recognition is necessary. We identify faces, remember people, interpret behavior, validate competence, and use categories to create continuity. The problem begins when a legitimate image acquires more authority than its evidence can carry. A face becomes a character. A behavior becomes a personality. A past becomes a future. The representation begins replacing the referent.
Across nine chapters, Recognition explores perception, re-cognition, measurement, the gaze, public image, memory, afterimage, and capture. Nobody may be misrecognized by others, but he can also misrecognize himself. Another person may sometimes see something he cannot see from inside his own continuity.
A trustworthy gaze therefore does more than recognize once. It can look again.
Nobody does not have to tear down every poster, reject every category, or control every interpretation. Recognition has done its work when the observer can still recognize who is leaving without believing the image has captured where he may go next.
