The Everlasting Gospel

ByWilliam Blake

A superb example of English mystical verse. William Blake was an English poet, painter, and printmaker.. He is famous for his prophetic poetry and mystical artistry and is now considered a seminal figure in the history of the arts of the Romantic Age. In The Everlasting Gospel, Blake does not present Jesus as a philosopher or traditional messianic figure but as a supremely creative being, above dogma, logic and even morality. Jesus, for Blake, symbolizes the vital relationship and unity between divinity and humanity: "All had originally one language and one religion: this was the religion of Jesus, the everlasting Gospel. Antiquity preaches the Gospel of Jesus."
