In my 12 years as a title I elementary school teacher, one of the biggest challenges has been teaching children to write well. In California students are expected to be able to write proficiently by 4th grade in the narrative, paraphrase summary, and response to literature genres. Many of the students barely have command of verbal English and write the way they talk. My book is a tool to help students better their writing skills in Response to Literature by providing them with a system and a format. It has worked wonders for my students! While not perfect, it gives them an opportunity to access the writing skill, improve communication, and prepare them for middle school and high school writing!
