About
Andy Taylor
Andy Taylor is a historian, translator, editor, and HEMA instructor whose research recovers the texts, techniques, and culture of European fencing from the late Middle Ages to the early modern period. A practitioner of Historical European Martial Arts since 2001, he is a senior instructor at the Stork’s Beak School of Historical Swordplay in Edinburgh. His work combines long practical experience with close textual study, using physical reconstruction to explore the techniques preserved in historical fencing literature. Andy’s published books include 'The Collected Works of William Hope' and separate editions of Hope’s principal fencing texts, George Hale’s 'A Private School of Defence', and Giovanni Filoteo Achillini’s 'Viridario'. His ongoing research encompasses Italian, German, English, and Scottish fight books, including the Rostock manuscript and works associated with Joachim Meyer, Achille Marozzo, and Philippo di Vadi. Through translation, transcription, modernisation, commentary, and practical interpretation, he makes rare sources accessible to scholars, practitioners, and general readers while preserving their historical and technical character.
