J.R. Maroney is originally from Baltimore, Maryland. He moved to Osaka, Japan at the age of 19 to study Japanese culture and language. In 2000 he graduated from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in Tokyo, Japan. He currently lives in Baltimore where he is active with writing and film making.
