The outsider was taking the gumptive step towards centre stage. No excuses for being creative. No excuses for being different. No excuses for thinking differently. No excuses for being excited about life. No excuses for exploring life within a framework of mutual respect. This was the new norm. Thus, for Ampleby, these albums highlighted the beginning of the focus of a global invitation to dance beyond the ‘norm’. The music in itself had its own inbuilt ‘selective’ mechanism. Evolutionary. Those who could not make the transition were going to be left behind. Filtered out. Separated from. Yet it was not elitist, precisely because the spectrum of alternative music was so diverse. The strange twists of consciousness needed to ‘hear’ the music meant that those who were locked into conformity were unable to deal with these new musical vibrations. But as a participant he could focus in on any one of the rhythms and use the dance to express some inner connection to the whole.
