Massimiliano Viel, PhD, is a composer, musician, and researcher. His multifaceted work as a composer, keyboardist, and sound designer has led him to collaborate with numerous ensembles and orchestras around the world, as well as with composers such as Luciano Berio and Karlheinz Stockhausen. In addition to creating nearly one hundred scores for acoustic and electronic instruments—ranging from solo pieces to full orchestral works—his artistic journey has explored the relationship between music and other media, producing performances and installations in close collaboration with theatre, visual arts, and dance. He has published books and articles on music theory, sound studies, and music education. His most recent titles include Listening Patterns: From Music to Perception and Cognition and The Little Book of Notations. He is Full Professor at the “G. Verdi” Conservatory in Milan, Italy.
