About
Oreste M. G. Debernardi

Oreste M. G. Debernardi is a relational artist, writer and independent researcher. His work lies at the intersection of art, semiotics, philosophy, psychoanalysis and the cognitive sciences. With a background in semiotics, since the early 2000s he has investigated the relationship between communication, affectivity, empathy and knowledge, focusing on how emotional activation and unconscious processes influence perception, learning and human interaction. His artistic practice treats relationships as a field of research. Through relational projects, writings and experimental situations, he explores how emotional involvement changes attention, memory and interpretation, and how affective processes may either support or hinder learning. Art thus becomes a means of producing knowledge through experience, moving beyond the traditional distinction between artwork and research. A significant part of his work examines the interaction between cognitive and affective processes. His approach is interdisciplinary rather than a conventional contribution to experimental neuroscience, bringing scientific knowledge into dialogue with the subjective and relational dimensions of human experience. His books and writings combine self-reflection, theoretical analysis and the study of relational experiences. His research revolves around a central question: how does experience become knowledge, and how does affect transform the conditions under which learning becomes possible?
