He was raised in a northern England cotton-weaving mill town in hard, but happy, times affected by World War II and its aftermath. A fellow of professional institutions, now retired, he has wide ranging experience of research, and manufacture world-wide. Much of his working life was spent in positions demanding practical, innovative, solutions to problems involving a wide range of disciplines. Several inventions were patented and produced profitably. In short, a living earned by successful problem solving, often by unconventional approaches and with ever looming deadlines. Now living in a small country town, with easy access to excellent limestone walking areas, his interest in matters scientific continue during retirement along with outdoor activities.
