Doug Waterfield was born in the backwoods of southern Arkansas with a crayon in his hand. He has always been “drawn” to creating, and has been making art for over 40 years. He even currently has a job in art, the culmination of a dream he has pursued since the second grade. His artistic interests lie mainly within in the realm of the tacky, weird, and at times disturbing. He loves horror, science fiction and cult films, and they appear prominently in his work. He is also fascinated with the history of atomic bombs and nuclear testing, and their effect on society. He seeks to elevate these ubiquitous subjects to the level of "high art" in his paintings. Most importantly, he does what he loves. Whether it be giant insects or atomic explosions, Doug also sees his art as an opportunity to make others, particularly the younger generation, aware of the overall strange history of American culture. Doug Waterfield is a Professor of Art at the University of Nebraska, Kearney.
