What is an art and design education for when a machine can produce the finished image? In this short introduction to The Moral Imagination, I argue that the answer lies in what the student becomes able to do: observe carefully, think through making, question a brief, exercise judgment and take responsibility for the work. Drawing on Ruskin, Fröbel, the Bauhaus and my experience of teaching design, this pamphlet offers a way to begin changing the brief, the studio and the conversation around student work.
