The book chronicles the lives of Colorado pioneers George and Betsy Phelps and eight of their ten children: Henry, a storyteller and poet, hauled freight from Denver to Leadville with his team of oxen and later ran sawmills in Florissant and Meeker; Andrew, who suffered from tuberculosis, owned one of the first pool halls in Colorado Springs and rubbed shoulders with some of the millionaires who made their money from Cripple Creek gold; Dan, a miner in Victor, abandoned his wife and ran away to Mexico, where he married a beautiful señorita as the revolution led by Pancho Villa got underway; Jim, a tough-as-nails man who did whatever it took to make a living, claimed 160 acres in Jefferson County alongside his father and kept both homesteads in the family through hard times. George and Betsy’s four daughters were dearly devoted sisters: Nettie, who led Bible classes in Cripple Creek, watched men become millionaires overnight and witnessed miners' strikes that made history; Mary Lucretia and Nellie raised their babies together in nearby Florissant, a thriving lumber center that was the “Gateway to Cripple Creek;” Addie, the youngest, was an expert horsewoman who passed on her love of ranch life to her daughters. The Phelps men and women weren’t famous and you won’t read about them in history books, but each one left stories behind that are worth telling.
