Miracles and Parables, what narrative Icons are saying is a 46-page introduction to narrative iconography, it incorporates 30 full-color icons, all original works by Mary Jane Miller using a mixture of egg yolk and ancient dirt. She juxtaposed the images with text that included history, religious context, and her reflections. The art and iconography combine inspired meditation and prayer to stimulate startling conclusions hidden in the images. Mary Jane Miller is respectful of the iconography tradition and knowledgeable of its long history but feels free to challenge the male-dominated church landscape of today’s theology. The text and image are uniquely formatted. Because an image is without words its impact is gentler, our response may be emotional without words. With the added descriptions and history the iconography comes alive in a special dynamic way. There are many ways to appreciate the visual language of icons. Their theological interpretation and message, their symbolism and layers of meaning, their historical and cultural story, the meditative and symbolic way in which they are created, and the artistic technique and practice they represent. This collection “Miracles and Parables” was exhibited in the Teryl Viner Gallery in the Community Church in Vero Beach, Florida in 2024 and 2025.
