Black Canaan

It is a regional horror story in the Southern Gothic mode, one of several such tales by Howard set in the piney woods of the ArkLaTex region of the Southern United States. Set in the Black River swamps of the deep South in the post-war era, the hero of this Lovecraftian story is called home by an impending race war, and must battle not only violent Negroes and Voodoo sorcerers, but also, for the first time in his life, the temptation of miscegenation. This story is an allegory, a cautionary tale of the danger of going over to the “dark side.” Enjoy.
