The MAD Pocket Survival Guide for Musicians
Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
This book is a practical mental-health survival guide written specifically for musicians and music professionals living life on and around the stage. Drawing on my dual perspective as a Neuro Holistic Therapist and long-time gigging musician, it explores how rehearsals, recording, late nights, financial pressure, band politics and the constant demand to “perform” can quietly erode wellbeing. Instead of abstract theory, the book offers a toolbox of clear, road-tested strategies to manage anxiety, low mood, burnout, impostor syndrome, creative blocks and the post-gig comedown – including simple rituals to use before, during and after shows. Alongside these tools, it encourages longer-term thinking: setting boundaries, protecting relationships, and planning realistic Plan B and Plan C options so that identity and purpose aren’t lost when the music stops. Grounded in lived experience and the ethos of Musicians Against Depression, this is a compassionate, stigma-free handbook designed to sit in a gig bag or studio drawer – a straight-talking companion to help musicians look after their minds as carefully as their instruments, and build a sustainable, emotionally healthy life in music. Written from both sides of the stage – it combines my professional expertise as a Neuro Holistic Therapist with decades of lived experience as a working musician and music producer, so the guidance is both clinically informed and deeply authentic to real music-life.
It's laser-focused on musicians and the music industry – not a generic self-help book, but a survival guide built specifically around rehearsals, gigs, touring, recording, band dynamics, creative burnout, performance anxiety and post-gig “comedown.” Practical, toolbox-style format – offers clear, step-by-step tools, exercises, checklists and “on-the-day” strategies that musicians can actually use before, during and after shows, not just theory or vague inspiration. Prevention as well as crisis support – shifts the conversation from “firefighting breakdowns” to building sustainable mental-health habits, boundaries and Plan B/C thinking so musicians can protect their wellbeing and their careers long-term. Rooted in community and social impact – linked to the Musicians Against Depression (MAD) ethos and wider mental-health advocacy in music, giving the book a ready-made platform, speaking opportunities and scope for workshops/podcasts/companion resources.
